Redesigning Sunny D Sunny D was once a highly successful fruit juice brand. Apart from being given lots of shelf space in supermarkets, it achieved high media coverage because of its dubious nutritional content. It was said to have a very high sugar content, too many preservatives and a vast amount of 'e'-based artificial colouring. It was also notoriously low in fruit content and vitamins. After an initial few years of spectacular success under the ownership of Procter & Gamble, the brand faded and was sold to the Sunny Delight Beverages Company (SDBC) in 2004 Part of SDBC's task was to revitalize the brand and to re-establish it in the market for all the right reasons, nou the wrong ones. The product was reformulated with a new recipe that included more fruit juice, the removal of the artificial colourings, and a reduction in sugar. To help reposition the brand and to communicate everything that was new about Sunny D, new packaging and labelling information was required. Using a Parents Advisory Panel, the Sunny D brand now provides copious and explicit information about the nutritional content, even to the point of including a guideline daily amount (GDA), thought to be the first for a soft drink. Which of the following statements about protein synthesis is false? Proteins are synthesized from the amino terminus to the carboxy terminus. The growing protein chain is passed from the tRNA in the A site to the charged tRNA in the P site. The next amino acid to be added to the growing protein chain is carried by its tRNA into the empty A site. During protein chain elongation, the ribosome moves closer to the 3' end of the mRNA template. The tRNA in the A site moves to the P site.

Assume that you are the owner of a solar panel shop (Sunny Panels Pty Ltd). Owing to the ongoing power crisis in your area and sharp increases in electricity prices over the last few years, there is a growing demand for alternative electricity in the form of solar panels. You sell and install these panels. You are making use of an electrician (the other product) to activate these panels for your customers. You are operating in a perfectly competitive market. The demand curve for your panels (in rand terms) is as follows: Qd = 2 000 - 3P +0.08Y + 6P2 with P = price of the product Y = income of your customers per month Py = price of another product R P2 = 4 000 and Y = 40 000 The marginal cost curve of the production of your panels is: Qs = -5 200 + 7P Required: 2.2. Calculate the equilibrium price and quantity sold per month, as well as the elasticity of your demand. (8) 2.3. If you want to increase your revenue, would it be worthwhile to hold a sale and why? (2) 2.4. Assume that the price for the electrician increases to 5 000 and because of a tax reduction by the government the income of your consumers increases to 44 000. 2.4.1. Calculate the new equilibrium price and quantity. (2) 2.4.2. Calculate the cross-price elasticity and income elasticity of demand and explain their meaning (8)
